Machine-Made Rugs

Machine-Made Rugs
The largest cost of producing a handmade rug is the tremendous amount of labor that goes into making the rug. It is no surprise that people have worked hard to produce similar rugs using power looms. While some machine made rugs are poor imitations of their handmade counterparts, many of the rugs produced today rival the look and feel of new handmade pieces.

Someone once suggested that an apt analogy of handmade versus machine made would be a live piano recital versus a computer generated performance. Both play the same notes and both are very beautiful, but the soul of the performer is only really evident in the live piece. So it is with machine made rugs. They are wonderful, but maybe just a little too perfect. For many applications, however, they are an ideal choice. They are almost always less expensive and can add a wonderful character to a room where you might not otherwise be able to afford a handmade rug. When you have pets or small children, they can be a good transitional piece that may be replaced in later years.

While some machine made rugs are produced from wool, most are normally made from polyester or one of several olefins. You can find rugs that look “cheap”, but most of the better machine made rugs have a soft, natural appearance.
